Did you know that to drive an ambulance in the UK you need to have an HGV licence? Whilst it’s a big part of your training, understanding the driving licence requirements for paramedics is something that you can easily overlook. Driving Licence Requirements for Paramedics
In the UK, paramedics must to hold a valid driving license which includes category C1. To find out what other qualifications you need, please speak to the HR team at your local ambulance service.
What is the C1 category?
The term C1 is for driving vehicles between 3.5T and 7.5T. It was created to fill the gap when the driving licence category system changed. It usually accommodates drivers who passed their car test before January 1997 and could drive up to 7.5T on a standard car licence. As a result, a category C1 is the minimum you would need to have but in practical terms, a category C licence gives you more flexibility for the future.
A category C allows you to drive any vehicle over 3,500KG (3.5T) with a trailer up to 750kg. For example, this would mean you could drive a 26T rigid lorry with a trailer up to 750KG. This is also called Class 2.
What do you need to do to pass your category C test?
There are some essential steps to take before you take your category C driving test.
- Apply for your provisional licence: before you can take to the roads you need to have provisional entitlement on your driving licence. You will need to complete forms D2 and D4 from DVLA and have a medical examination. You can book your medical online through Hartlip HGV.
- Take your driving theory test: when you have your provisional driving licence you will need to book and pass your theory test there are lots of ways you can learn and prepare for the test. See our guide about driving theory tests.
- CPC module 2 case studies: this is a key part of becoming an HGV driver and is made-up of seven case studies.
- Practical driving lessons: learning to drive an HGV with us is a great choice to get focused tailored one-to-one driving tuition. - Your practical test: this includes off-road exercises, on road driving and CPC module 4. It will evaluate your ability to perform various manoeuvres as well as demonstrating safe driving techniques.
Periodic CPC training
Whether you drive lorries or ambulances once you’ve obtained your HGV licence it’s essential to keep your skills and knowledge up to date. All HGV drivers, including emergency workers, must complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to maintain their driving entitlement.
