There are so many elements of the HGV driving test that it can feel confusing so here’s our guide about becoming an HGV driver. The HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) driving test in the UK consists of different elements that assess both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
The very first thing to do is to apply for your provisional licence and have your medical examination.
HGV Driver Theory Test:
The HGV theory test is divided into two parts. The first part asks you 100 multiple-choice questions and candidates must score 85% to pass. The second part is the hazard perception test. This assesses your ability to identify and respond to potential hazards on the road. There are lots of ways to prepare for your HGV Driving Theory Test including the Highway Code, official DVSA guides and online practice tests.
CPC Module 2 Case Studies:
You can do the CPC Module 2 test before or after your theory test. It has seven case studies that you work through on a computer. You need to answer 7-8 questions per case study and score at least 40 out of 50.
Practical Driving Test:
This is made up of three different parts:
Off-road HGV exercises are done at the test centre. You will have to do an ‘S’ shaped reverse in a bay and show the uncoupling and recoupling procedure if you’re taking the test with a trailer, for example for a category C+E licence.
On-road HGV driving test will include an hour of driving where you will be asked to carry out different manoeuvres such as reversing, parking, and driving in different road and traffic conditions and answer safety questions. You will need to have 12 minors or less and no dangerous faults to pass.
CPC Module 4 is the last part of the practical test. It assesses your ability to carry out vehicle safety checks, load the vehicle properly, stop trafficking of illegal immigrants, reduce physical risk to yourself and others and assess emergency situations. You will need to score 15 out of 20 on each section and a minimum overall score of 80%.
