Lorry driving down dual carriageway

Lorry driving down dual carriageway

On 15th November 2021, in an effort to recruit more HGV drivers into the industry, the Government changed the law to enable anyone with a car licence to train straight for a Class 1 or C+E licence without doing Class 2 first. This is a great way for drivers looking to change career into the haulage industry to train quickly. Here is our guide for anyone looking to do similar.

How do I apply for a Class 1 licence?

If you are thinking about becoming an HGV driver, then you must meet certain criteria before you can start training. You must have a full car driving licence and be over 18 years old. The first thing to do will be to apply for a C+E provisional entitlement. You will need to send your driving licence with a completed D2 application form and D4 medical form to the DVLA. The D4 must be completed by a doctor and there is usually a charge for it. We can help you arrange your HGV medical and eye test. As soon as you have your provisional entitlement you can start learning.

What tests do I have to pass to get my HGV Class 1 licence?

Like with other HGV categories, you will need to pass your theory test, CPC Module 2 Case Studies, On-Road Practical Test, Reversing Test and CPC Module 4. We would recommend you pass your theory and Module 2 before you start your lessons. We can help you book all of these tests.

What will I be able to drive after I pass my test?

When you pass your Class 1 test and you receive your driving licence back from DVLA, you will see the additional entitlements listed on the back. This will include C1, C, BE, C1E and CE. This means you will be able to drive vehicles including cars, rigid lorries and articulated lorries.

I’m worried that I might not pass my Class 1 first time

We understand that driving tests can be daunting especially when you are going from driving a car to a Class 1 vehicle. That’s why we offer Pass Protection when you book your training with us. It acts a little like insurance, if you fail your test first time around you get two hours driving before your retest plus the cost of another test. This means you don’t have to pay for additional training or to hire a vehicle when you retake your test.

I already have a Class 2 licence, do I need to re-do my theory tests?

No, you will not need to resit your theory tests if you are upgrading your licence from Class 2 to Class 1. You may need to have a HGV Medical depending on your age. Call us to discuss this further.
