Description
The HGV Medical including eye test is one of the first steps you need to take in becoming an HGV driver. Before starting your HGV training course, you need to have provisional entitlement on your driving licence. To apply for your provisional licence, you need to complete the D2 and D4 forms. That means you must have a medical examination and your D4 form will need to be completed by a doctor.
What’s involved in the HGV Medical?
Your driver medical will consists of a medical history questionnaire and then a physical examination that will include an eyesight test using a Snellen chart and a blood pressure check to ensure your BP meets DVLA standard.
Vision Requirement: you must meet 6/7.5 in one eye and 6/60 in the other on a 3 metre Snellen chart. If you wear glasses or contact lenses for driving, you must bring these along with your current prescription to the medical assessment.
Medical History Questionnaire: You will be asked questions about a wide range of issues such as epilepsy, seizures, insulin treated diabetes, and other types of medical conditions so that the doctor can determine if you meet the required standards.
The doctor will complete your D4 form based on the answers you provide relating to your medical history, medications, and the results of your examination. The whole process of carrying out an HGV medical should usually take around 15 minutes.
How often do I need to have an HGV medical including eye test?

- Then from the age of 45, you need a medical every 5 years until the age of 65.
- Then from 65 onwards, a medical is required every year.
